A fun thriller for sure 📖
This read follows two best friends, Emily & Kristen, who take a traditional backpacking trip every year after undergrad until it takes a dark turn during a trip to Cambodia. Emily is assaulted by a man, whom Kristen, walking in on the incident, attacks, and kills. While both friends agree that this was an act of self-defense, Emily is left distraught, not just from the trauma she endured, but from paranoia as the two friends worked together to cover up the killing. Additionally, Emily is shaken by Kristen’s ability to shake off the events completely as she herself struggles with PTSD and conflicted feelings in the year following.

The next year, Kristen begs that they take a trip to Chile, which Emily is hesitant about initially but eventually agrees to out of dedication to her friend who she believes saved her life. When on their trip, a similar act occurs and Kristen’s behavior begins to concern Emily. Emily attempts to return to her home in WI to distance herself from her friend who in turn makes every effort to insert herself further into Emily’s life and her new romantic relationship.
This book has some Single White Female vibes - Emily struggles with her own intuition as well as her allegiance to Kristen. She begins to wonder how much she really knows about her best friend & to what lengths she would go to protect Kristen and in turn, herself.🔪
I loved the travel elements of this book and the ending was very unexpected! I love a thriller that is heavy & fun all at once, which this one certainly is. Would recommend picking it up if you’re looking for a unique page-turner! 📚
