Beautiful World, Where Are You - Sally Rooney

Writer: Sommer Downs Sommer Downs

Rooney's new novel follows four musing millennials for a read that mirrors the feelings and uncertainty of living in a pandemic world.

If you like Rooney, you might like this one. 📘

This book follows four friends trying to figure out adulting, friendship, and relationships in the modern world.

The book very much feels like a post-pandemic read. The characters are musing intellectuals trying to make sense of the world around them. Much of the book is conversations & commentary between the friends in which they banter about what the purpose of their lives are & where they fit in the world. As the characters try to answer these questions, the reader may find themselves attempting to as well.

Rooney often writes about intellectual characters that can often feel passive at times, however, in this novel I found this to be especially true - sometimes to a point of frustration. This passiveness felt especially irritating when it came to the female characters. The females are often passive to their male counterparts, especially when it comes to relationships and sex, which I didn’t find to be realistic of the modern woman, plus it sets a negative example for young adult readers (much of Rooney’s readership). Also, the extent to which her characters feel the need to prove their intelligence to one another can similarly get annoying.

However, I did enjoy this book overall. It sort of felt like reading a book about millennials overthinking everything, which I found somewhat relatable. 😅

Of Rooney’s books, I will say this is my least favorite. However, I am very excited about the release of the Conversations With Friends (my fave book of hers by far) series on Hulu sometime next year! 🙌

Rooney has such a unique style that I enjoy reading. While this book was not my fave of hers, I would still recommend it to those who enjoyed her previous books. 👌

What’s your fave Rooney book? Also, if you read this one I would love to know what you thought of it as I have some mixed feelings!👇

“Maybe we're just born to love and worry about the people we know, and to go on loving and worrying even when there are more important things we should be doing. And if that means the human species is going to die out, isn't it in a way a nice reason to die out, the nicest reason you can imagine? Because when we should have been reorganising the distribution of the world's resources and transitioning collectively to a sustainable economic model, we were worrying about sex and friendship instead. Because we loved each other too much and found each other too interesting. And I love that about humanity, and in fact it's the very reason I root for us to survive - because we are so stupid about each other.” - Sally Rooney, Beautiful World Where Are You
