This beauty may have been the best book I’ve read so far this year ✨

The story follows twin sisters that are inseparable as children until one day they are split in two. After running away from their small southern hometown and Black community, one sister diverges, leaving her black identity behind and secretly passing as a white woman living in an LA suburb. She is married to a white man and living the life of a wealthy housewife.
The other sister returns to their hometown years later, after her life takes a difficult turn and she feels she has no other option. In coming back home, she feels a need to reunite with her twin sister and the reader sees how their stories intertwine as she attempts to find her missing half.
Following both sisters and their families, the book is centered around themes of identity, race, gender, and what it means to be family. It explores how many lives we lead in one lifetime as well as how escaping the root of who we are and where we come from is a seemingly impossible feat.
The book brings to question:
Can you ever truly forget who you are and where you came from?
Is shapeshifting and code-switching a self-sacrificial act in some cases or just a lie?
I’m not sure I’ve read something that is so complex with such compelling writing that is also so easy to read. I highly recommend this to anyone & everyone & can’t wait to read The Mothers by @britrbennett next! 📚
